Anneke de Bod (Director & CEO)

Master of Commerce (Logistics Management) from Stellenbosch University


Anneke de Bod is a Director at GAIN, Lecturer at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Logistics, and a Short Term Consultant for The World Bank.

 

With her at the helm, she drives GAIN’s business strategy thanks to years of experience in logistics management within the Transnet Group, lecturing at Stellenbosch University, and sharing her knowledge by publishing research and consulting on various projects. Fascinated by the concept of people engagement – be they employees or customers – she never stops trying to find creative, practical solutions that surpass their academic foundations. With more than a decade's worth of experience in strategy development and management consulting, Anneke leads GAIN with a passion and vision for its future. Her consulting engagements with government and industry focus on the role of organisational culture and change management principles in facilitating logistics' successes, with a current interest in how to translate this to support the implementation of macrologistics strategy.

 

Anneke is currently busy with her PhD in Logistics Management at Stellenbosch University, with a doctoral thesis titled “Macrologistics change management framework: The case for modal shift in South Africa”.

 

 

Professor Zane Simpson (Director & Analyst)

PhD (Industrial Engineering) from Stellenbosch University


 

Zane is a Director at GAIN, an Extraordinary Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Industrial Engineering, and a Short Term Consultant for The World Bank.


He is the mastermind behind the development of GAIN's macrologistics measurement tools, including freight flow and logistics costs models pioneered in South Africa and followed by successful application in Sub-Saharan Africa, India, Mongolia and Uzbekistan. As a globally recognised and published researcher, he frequently observes and contributes to new developments in macrologistics modelling. This allows him to refine and expand GAIN's macrologistics models annually to provide further functionalities and insights.


Zane acquired his PhD degree in Industrial Engineering from Stellenbosch University in 2021, with a doctoral thesis titled “Disaggregated national freight demand modelling in emerging economies”.

 

 

Professor Jan Havenga (Director)

PhD (Logistics Management) from Stellenbosch University, Master of Business Administration from Unisa


Jan is a Director at GAIN, an Emeritus Professor at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Industrial Engineering, and a Short Term Consultant for The World Bank.


He is an experienced market and macrologistics researcher and consultant, a strategic and change management specialist, and an expert in corporate strategy and marketing. As a globally renowned pioneer in the emerging field of macrologistics, Jan has authored and co-authored more than 30 scientific papers in this field and related disciplines, along with co-authoring the first book on macrologistics. He has led a large number of national and regional projects in this field in South Africa, Southern Africa, India, Uzbekistan and Mongolia. Jan is also a National Research Foundation-rated researcher thanks to his consistent contribution to areas such as freight flow and logistics cost measurement, which has been used to inform national development, infrastructure planning and rail renaissance.


As the initiator of GAIN's freight flow and logistics costs models, he has been involved in the evolution of these models for more than a decade. His work on freight flow modelling began when he acquired his PhD degree in Logistics Management from Stellenbosch University in 2007, with a doctoral thesis titled “The development and application of a freight flow model for South Africa”.

 

 

 

Stefaan Swarts (Researcher & Analyst)

Master of Commerce (Operations Research) from Stellenbosch University


   

Stefaan is a Researcher & Analyst at GAIN, an Extraordinary Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Industrial Engineering, and a Short Term Consultant for The World Bank.


He is a detail-oriented mathematical modeller who researches, builds, and visualises freight demand modelling methodologies within a sparse data environment with a proven track record of evaluating different logistics and policy scenarios on a national level. His passion is to enable quality of life improvements to large populations through informing policy and decision makers with accurate data. As an experienced researcher & analyst, he helps us translate the intricate complexities of real-life problems into detailed, insightful models. With the ability to focus on detail without losing sight of the bigger picture, he is invaluable to the conceptualisation and development of new macrologistics models.

 

 

Henk Neethling (Researcher & Analyst)

Master of Commerce (Logistics Management) from Stellenbosch University


Henk is a Researcher & Analyst at GAIN and a Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University's Department of Logistics.


He is responsible for writing and editing academic and market research, developing and editing presentations, analysing, managing, and processing macroeconomic data, developing and maintaining our website, and general problem-solving. Additionally, he assists in marketing and communication, quantitative modelling processes, scenario planning, stakeholder engagement and consultation, and strategic thinking.

Werner van Greuning (Researcher & Analyst)

Bachelor of Commerce (Transport Economics) Honours from Stellenbosch University


 

Werner is a Researcher & Analyst at GAIN.


His main responsibilities include analysis, management and processing of macro-economic data; problem solving; quantitative modelling; and assistance in scenario planning and critical thinking.


Werner is soon graduating with a Master of Commerce (Transport Economics) degree from Stellenbosch University. His master’s thesis is focused on providing an accessibility study of the City of Cape Town based on the 15-minute city principles.

 

Dr Sandra Gertenbach (Researcher & Analyst)

PhD (Management of Technology and Innovation) from The DaVinci Institute for Technology Management


Sandra is a part-time Researcher & Analyst at GAIN and performs supervision for doctoral candidates at the business school of The DaVinci Institute.

She was employed by SA Transport Services/Transnet SOC from 1987 to 2021 and concluded her Transnet career as Executive Manager, Strategy & Business Planning in the Office of the CE at Transnet Freight Rail (TFR). Her experience has given her comprehensive knowledge of the South African transport policy environment and the strategic issues of the rail industry. She further has extensive experience in strategy development and implementation, including operational experience in a leadership role at Shosholoza Meyl (rail passenger services). Additionally, she has a keen interest in the theories of Systems Thinking. Her passion is to integrate all elements of a system and communicate the strategic direction, plans and implementation performance to various stakeholders.


Her doctoral thesis, titled "Imperatives for the Advancement of Freight Intermodalism in South Africa: A Systems Thinking Approach", was awarded the DaVinci Doctoral Academic Excellence Award in October 2024, a year after obtaining her degree.
